Ive started my '89 Mustang GT project by grinding, cutting, welding, and sanding myself silly. I'll post pics and progress reports as the weeks go by.
Im using all HOK materials, heres a pic of the Tangelo base Im using.
Ive started by removing some minor rust inside the framerails under the strut towers where the K-member mounts up.
After cutting and sandblasting all the rust out I tack welded in these tubes to keep the framerails from crushing when the K-member bolts get tightened down. I then hit it with a coat of Chassis Saver sealer and weled up a 1/8" patch panel.
Better than new!
I'll post more as I go along...

The stuff I have is a brand called "Chassis Saver" I was told that it is equal to POR 15. It dries to a satin black although I'll never see it again inside those framerails.
I havent gotten enough progress to post any pics on the engine compartment, but I do have my girlfriend out in the garage with me sanding her fingers off...thats love right there! lol! Heres my HOK tech manual I printed out and put in a binder. My new bible. My China Freight (harbor) masking station... The gun I'll attempt to use... |

I got a looooot done in the past two days. I havent filled that many holes since that one time on spring break! lol.
Engine compartment is almost done. I was gonna buy some pre cut and bended inner fender panels and just weld them in, but I decided to do it myself. It took a little more time and was cheaper, but the gratification of doing it all yourself is worth it! I started by using poster board as templets so I could get the panels just right. Cut out my panels and pre fit... And welded them in... Im no pro, but Im happy with the welds. They should hold just fine. driver side... [/img] |

Being a GT, the car came with power windows, locks, and mirrors. Im removing all of that and putting in manual window regulators. So I decided to fill in the holes in the body that the harness travels through to get to the doors...
More door jamb holes filled We also filled in the fresh air vent from the cowl since this car will be without a heater box. Heres my buddy Kevin doing a little Overhead MIG work... Since I wont be running winshield wipers Ive decided to fill in the hole in the cowl where the wiper motor arm sticks through... |

I also had a small rust hole on the drivers side floor board, right about where the heel of your foot would be when on the gas pedal...
I just cut it out and bent up a new piece and welded it in... There were also a **** load of round holes with rubber plugs in them in the floor. I guess Ford didnt want Mustangs to float. I also filled them in...If this thing catches fire while going through the traps at 140+ MPH I dont want any fire getting in at me! Every time I take a step back and look at this thing I get worried that I may be in over my head... Its just parts...It may take forever, but I'll get it back together eventually. If I put in a few more hours under the welding helmet tomorrow I may be ready to paint my cage this week sometime. I cant wait to play with my new paint gun! |
